In this very early photograph, the existing fields and farmhouses are faintly visible. The view is from Vista Rock, near the present location of Belvedere Castle, looking southwest across what is now the Lake.
Notes:
The drawings in this series (11 of the 12 original submission drawings for the competition to design Central Park) were loaned to the Museum of City of New York by the Department of Parks. In 1988, this series was transferred to the NYC Municipal Archives and is described in accession sheet no. 88-031. The Department of Parks still retains the master Greensward Plan.
